Hockey Success
In the first match of the season, the St Mary's Sixth Form beat Hills Road Sixth Form College Second XI 2-0, both goals coming in an action-packed first half. Though there were chances both ends, the final margin of victory could have been even greater as we hit the post once and went close on a few other occasions. Congratulations to the whole team!
May The Force Be With You
Here are some more photos of the Physicists working on their force-extension experiment The idea is to add weights to a copper wire to see at what mass the copper wire reaches its elastic limit and reaches plastic deformation. I'm not quite sure what that means but, hey, I'm only an English teacher.
I guess from all those smiles that the experiment went well.

Subject Profile: Physics
Students in the Sixth Form buck all sorts of national trends and nowhere is this more obvious than in our booming Science Department where numbers (and exam results) are extremely healthy. Our bloggers took a peek at the new Physics lab today and found the Lower 6th working away at an intriguing experiment.
In the course of the next few weeks the 6th Form Physicists will be making use of our wonderful location to attend a series of lectures at Cambridge University's Department of Physics. We'll update you when they get back from the first one.

Book of the Month
Each month the Sixth Form blog is going to recommend a book for you to get your teeth into. The book will be on display (and available for borrowing) from the library so don't just read the blog: read the book too.
To start with we'll explore, or re-explore, Cambridge with Martin Garrett's Cambridge: A Cultural and Literary History. It's a book to walk around with, a book to dip into, a book that can help us find a side to Cambridge we never knew existed. Oh yes, and it's a book that just happens to have been written by the husband of our Head of English.
