World War II, 1937-1946?
Today's marks the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II. Or does it?
J.G. Ballard's great novel reminds us that the war started at different times for different groups. For the Poles it began on 1st September 1939; for the British expatriate community in Shanghai it began in 1941; for the Chinese it began in 1937. More importantly, his novel reminds us that the impact of war does not end with the formal end of hostilities.
So World War II: 1939-1945 or 1937-1946? Perhaps we can make too much of anniversaries.
The Upper Sixth Are Back
The Upper Sixth returned today after a well deserved rest and some fantastic AS results. It was a day for catching up with old friends, meeting new ones and enjoying the new Sixth Form Centre. Oh yes, and for doing some hard work.

St Mary's on the BBC
Cantore, one of St Mary's choirs, performed on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday. To hear them click here but hurry: it's only available online until Sunday. If you haven't got time to listen to the whole programme (on Mary Ward, who inspired the founding of our school) then forward wind to the last few minutes to hear Cantore.
New Year, New Blog, New Sixth Form
The new academic year starts tomorrow but the Sixth Form is already up and running and we now have a blog to celebrate the fact. We also have a stunning new Sixth Form space which the Lower 6th were the first to experience when they came in today for their induction day.
This year we have record numbers in the Lower Sixth and are looking forward to an action-packed year. You can follow all the action and see the photos right here.
